Joe Wilder was a beloved American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. The National Endowment for the Arts honored him with its highest honor in jazz, the NEA Jazz Masters Award for 2008. Mr. Wilder recorded with Jay Jay Johnson, Sonny Stitt, Shirley Scott, Oliver Nelson, Yusef Lateef, Gil Evans, Tadd Dameron, Etta Jones, and many more jazz greats. He played in the orchestras of Jimmie Lunceford, Lucky Millinder, Dizzy Gillespie, and tCount Basie. In the 60s Mr. Wilder performed on several occasions with the New York Philharmonic under Andre Kostelanetz and Pierre Boulez and played lead for the Symphony Of The New World from 1965 to 1971. He was also an avid photographer. Mr. Wilder passed away on May 9, 2014 in New York City.
