Summer Day Camp is Back!

School may be out, but for us, that means it’s time for summer camp!

We are excited to host our annual bilingual (Spanish/English) summer day camp on July 20-23, 2023, from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for 20 children, ages 8-14, to join us in community and education together. We are please to announce that our registration for this year’s day camp, Caring for Creation, is now open, and can be completed here!

With the help and leadership of David Rojas Martinez, our Coordinator of Faith Formation and Diaconal Fellow Erin Brown, participants will explore our roles as caretakers of our shared planet home, learn about opportunities for interacting with nature in the heart of the city, engage in age-appropriate lessons about living in an age of climate change, and immerse themselves in activities guided by the creation myths found in the Book of Genesis. We will provide a full midday meal and light snacks served in the morning and afternoon.

As we finalize details and plan for these four days of day camp, we are excited at the many grounding team-building activities and faith-based lessons starting Thursday, July 20. This will be a fun day of making connections, setting ground rules, and learning a common vocabulary of creation care from a Christian perspective for the youth of this parish. This will happen on-site at the church building as well as in surrounding areas of the city.

On Friday, July 21, participants will visit the Museum of Natural History wherein we will be able to begin to gain an appreciation for a more scientific approach to who we are as a species sharing a home planet with many others as equals. On Saturday, July 22, we will spend the day in the slice of nature in Manhattan known as Central Park. The day camp will have the opportunity to explore the park, take guided games/activities, and spend time immersing ourselves in the man-made marvel. Finally, On Sunday, July 23, we will present our reflections, epiphanies, and findings with both the English-language and Spanish-language worshipping communities as we complete our time together.

It is our hope and prayer that you will support this ministry, with or without a young one of your own! If you would like to sign up as a volunteer to help with food, supervision, and/or other tasks, please reach out to Erin Brown (ebrown@saintpeters.org). We also encourage you to share this information with children and youth who might want to participate.
