Artist Statement
The work presented here are my efforts to redefine what is important to me about painting. They are a departure from my previous figurative work based on observation. The marks now liberated form the image explode off the page. These works are joyous, vivid displays of color, paint, and pattern. The images are worked and reworked until they come together in a surprising and often unpredictable way. They are a reflection of how art can be used to adapt to a new environment and the personal challenges of change. Perhaps they capture the energy of New York City.

Abby Zonies has a BFA from Boston University in 1977, and an MFA from The School of the Museum of Fine / Tufts University in 1980. She taught painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston for over thirty years. Her work has been shown extensively in the New England area and is included in numerous private and corporate collections. Abby is the recipient of a Massachusetts Foundation Fellowship in 1981.
She moved to Manhattan in 2012 and was inducted into the National Association of Woman Artists in 2013. She was the recipient of the Miriam E. Helper Memorial Award for her painting in the show Ev(e)olution at the New York Public Library, Riverside branch, 2014. Abby also received an award for Works on Paper at the Annual members exhibition of the National Association of Woman Artists, 2016.
Abby has exhibited in many juried shows in Manhattan since her move here, most recently in Life on Earth, at the Williamsburg Art Center in Brooklyn, New York, 2017. This is her first solo show in Manhattan.
