Our Lady of Guadalupe / Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is celebrated at Saint Peter’s Church on Wednesday evening, December 11. Mass is at 7:00 with Bishop Paul Eggensteiner and representatives of the ELCA’s Association of Latino Ministries. With processions in traditional dress, mariachis, dance, refreshments and music. The celebration continues until 11:00 p.m.
In her exhibition, Chellis Baird paves the entryway of Nevelson Chapel with her sculptural paintings. Baird’s work lies at the intersection of painting, sculpture, and textiles. She believes that through texture, evidence of the human hand, and emotional sensations through color, one can move the viewer's eye from screens to the physical world. On display in the Narthex and Living Room galleries.
After training as a photographer at Yale, Diana MacKown worked alongside Louise Nevelson in New York City. These photographs offer a unique view into Nevelson’s studio, trips abroad and finished work, like Nevelson Chapel when it was first completed. Whether candid or formal, Diana’s lens is clever, playful and sharp. On display in the Narthex and Living Room galleries.
“Coincidence,” Jinhong Kim’s exhibition of photography that captures New York City as a masterpiece made up of its buildings, is on display from June 20 to August 29, 2019, at the Living Room Gallery of Saint Peter’s Church, 54th Street at Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
“Congeries of Beings,” Sung Won Yun’s exhibition of abstract mixed media paintings that link past, present, and future into an emotional contemplation of serenity, is on display from June 13 to August 22, 2019, at the Narthex Gallery of Saint Peter’s Church, 54th Street at Lexington in Midtown Manhattan.
Saint Peter’s will be open from 10-4 on May 18, with a behind-the-scenes tour with Pastor Jared Stahler at 2pm and another at 3pm.
For Priest, jazz evokes “the rich, surprising content I want my paintings to offer my audience,” and this exhibition is the latest refinement of her technique, which layers multiple senses onto paper to capture permanently the fleeting moments, rhythm, and dynamism of soulful jazz performance.
The transparency and the fragility of memory are evoked with whitewashed glazes and vintage tissue paper dress patterns, symbols of broken lines and arrows reconfigured in a language of lines, recalling the pentimento of ancient frescos.
The work presented here are my efforts to redefine what is important to me about painting. They are a departure from my previous figurative work based on observation. The marks now liberated form the image explode off the page. These works are joyous, vivid displays of color, paint, and pattern. The images are worked and reworked until they come together in a surprising and often unpredictable way. They are a reflection of how art can be used to adapt to a new environment and the personal challenges of change. Perhaps they capture the energy of New York City.
